Welcome to the Hoogland and van der Mee Family Page. My grandmother came to Canada after WWII as a war bride. She married a Canadian Soldier and then moved to Toronto from Amsterdam. Her father was Rijk Hoogland, and he was born in Sloten, Noord-Holland. Rijk Hoogland married Annetta van der Mee in March of 1924 in Amsterdam. Annetta was born in Leiden.
Our Dutch branches are mostly from Amsterdam, Friesland, Leiden, Mijdrecht, and Flevoland.

The van der Mee Family
Annetta van der Mee and her siblings lived in a Catholic Orphanage after the death of their mother in 1916. They all stayed there (except the eldest because she was already of age and married) until they were 21 years of age. Their father was still alive, but in those days he needed to work and couldn't look after the children. It was normal practice for children to be sent to live in an orphanage after the death of a mother, even if they still had a father. One of the children decided to stay with the Nuns and may have lived out her life there, my Nan is not sure. I also found out from a fellow researcher that this branch of the family had many "Dutch Mennonite" ancestors.
Some of the siblings from my Great Grandmother's family moved to Australia and some went to the USA.
