Howell Family - Cobbler's Island, Newfoundland

While researching my HOWELL family I found a record for my Great Great Grandfather, Isaiah HOWELL.  This record is the "Application For Registration of Birth" created in 1935.  It tells me that he was born February 18th, 1862 - Cobbler's Island, Newtown (Bonavista Bay), Newfoundland and that his parents were Willliam and Mary (SAINSBURY).  It also tells me a few bits of information that interests me.

  1. His father was a School Master.
  2. There are "...records of the Howell family (are) kept very carefully and treasured in the old family Bible."

I would love to see the family Bible that is mentioned.  Please contact me if you know more about this family treasure.

Nameless Photographs - Can You Help?



I love old photos and I get really excited when I can go to my Grandmother's house and scan the pictures she's found.  I love the idea of not letting those ancestors or relatives be forgotten.  This is why it makes me very sad that these lovely ladies are nameless.  My paternal Aunt shared them with me and asked if I could try to find out who they are. The older photo is a Tintype.  It's possible that the tintype is a post-mortem portrait.  I'm not sure, but there is something off about the way the lady sitting down is posed.  My Great Grandfather's mother (Frances Simms) died when she was 35, could this be a photo of her?
These photos were in my Grandfather's photo collection when he passed away. Nothing was written on them.  We THINK they may be connected to his parents who were from Newfoundland. His father was Wentworth Barnes b.1887 in Little Bay, Newfoundland [son of Duncan Barnes b.1863 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland d.1935 in Toronto, ON & Frances Simms b.1867 St. Anthony, Newfoundland d.1902 Boot Harbour, Newfoundland] and his mother was Bessie Louise Howell b.1897 in Newtown, Newfoundland d.1986 Toronto, ON [Daughter of Isaiah Howell b.1862 Newtown, Newfoundland d.1936 in Glovertown, Newfoundland & Cecilia Jane Andrews b.1864 Cape Island, Newfoundland d.1903 Newtown, Newfoundland].

The Family Mystery Ancestor

 I was so excited yesterday to finally receive the certified copy of my Great Grandfather's Registration of Death.  I ordered this through the Service Ontario online ordering feature and opened my mail to find my copy yesterday.  It was well worth the minimal cost and the two-week wait. Harry WARREN is one of my "brick walls", and this document has shed some light on a few things that I was not sure of.  First, his father was born in England and his MOTHER was born in Ireland.  Her name was Marguerite Ryan, not Margaret Bynn as was transcribed on Harry's marriage record.  So, this explains why my previous searches for his parents have not turned up much.  I'm hoping that this new information will help me find the missing links for this branch of the family!!

UPDATE!!  I've solved a few more mysteries since this original post in 2013.  His parents were George WARREN and Margaret BYRON, both were born in Pennsylvania, USA.
