Family Lore vs. Family Fact

Original Post 5/14/2015 (Lisa's Family Pages)

I have been working hard trying to separate the facts from stories over the past few weeks. In my last post, I shared some family stories that my long lost cousin from Connecticut, USA shared with me. Some of these bits of information were VERY HELPFUL in figuring out our Warren Family Ancestry. Others I can't find proof of (yet) and other things were mixed up with different family members. That being said if it wasn't for speaking with my cousin I never would have figured out the Warren family tree. I am so glad that I wrote her that letter.

The story about being connected to the Wormwood family was true, although I can't find any Native American connection (yet). My 4x Great Grandfather Joseph Warren was born Joseph Wormwood, in Kennebunk, Maine, USA. When he moved to Sewickley, Pennsylvania he started using the name Joseph Warren. He was known as Joseph W. Warren. The W was for Wormwood. He was the ancestor that changed the surname for our Warren bloodline. This explains why it was so difficult to

connect with our family here in Canada to the family in Pennsylvania.

Our Connecticut cousin also gave the surname Dempsey. She told me that her fathers Aunt Kate (Catherine Byron) was married to Albert Dempsey, but what I found was Timothy Dempsey married Annie, Kate's sister. Finding that helped me find Kate and Annie's father James Byron. He was living with Annie Byron Dempsey and her family in the early 1900s, New York. I believe that Catherine "Kate" Byron may have married a Mr. Adams. I am still trying to find their marriage record to confirm.

It leaves me with a lot more questions and I'm still working out the kinks. Once I have everything proven with documentation I will add a new family tree to the Warren family page and share some of the neat facts I've found regarding our Railroad connected family.

Thanks to my fellow genealogists that helped me find some of the documents I needed to piece it all together. I didn't know for sure if we had American ancestors, let alone roots so deep in Maine stretching back to the 1700s. A pleasant surprise.

Our connections on the Warren / Wormwood side goes back to Kennebunk, Maine. A few were from Wells, Maine as well.

Check back soon.
