Warren Family DNA Results

Original Post 9/17/2014

The Warren results are in.  I ordered a Family Finder test through Family Tree DNA for my Uncle.  He volunteered to swab the inside of his cheek for the sake of family research.  Thank you to that wonderful Uncle for feeding my obsession with genealogy and our genetic roots.

The Family Finder test was very helpful in giving our ancestral breakdown.  It turns out that the Warren / Hoogland children have 50% Scandinavian and 50% British Isles roots. Looking at the size of my Uncles and all the fair hair and blue eyes in our family there is no doubt that we have a bit of
Scandinavian blood running through our veins.  My guess is most of this comes from Nanny because my mtDNA results have many matches in Norway and other areas of Scandinavia.

Unfortunately, the family finder test didn't show many close family matches that I could use to try and solve the mystery about Grandpa Harry Warren (born 1890).  Where was he really born? Where did his ancestors come from? So, I upgraded to the Y-DNA test and waited for results.

NOT ONE WARREN SURNAME MATCH… yet.

What it did show were cousins, my guess is 5th or 6th.  The only thing is, all of these matches (37 markers, at a distance of 1) have the WARMATH surname and one with the WORMAN (37 markers, at a distance of 3) surname.  I contacted these matches and one lady replied.  She was very helpful.  She gave me a lot of documentation on the Warmath’s of the United States where these long lost cousins are from.  I even joined the Warmath surname DNA project.  Hopefully, in time I will find out how our Warren ancestor fits into this family.  It might take years, or it might not happen at all.  I’m hopeful that more people will submit DNA for testing and one day a closer match will pop up.  So far all trails lead to the USA and not Ireland.  I am more convinced that Harry Warren and his brother Frank took on another name and were not Warren’s at all.  Only more research will tell us.

I have updated the show the new results mentioned in this post.  Enjoy!

P.S) Nanny has volunteered to be my next guinea pig; I hope to get the results in the next month or two.  I am very curious to see if her ancient roots are 100% Scandinavian.

UPDATE!!  I have found out more about the Warren Family in the USA.  Check more recent posts for updates. The Warren DNA percentages have also been updated in more recent posts.
